Never Lark Nor Eagle: A Fighter Pilot's Story, Vol. 1
Published in Paperback by Xlibris Corporation (November, 2002)
Author: Ray Castagnaro
Average review score:

An epic for the jet age
If you've ever wondered what it's like to be behind the stick of a combat aircraft, read this book! The dogfight scenes are so realistic, I could almost feel the g-force pinning me to the chair as I was reading. The author, a former fighter pilot himself, uses stripped down prose peppered with Air Force lingo to paint a taught picture of aerial combat.

But ultimately, "Never Lark Nor Eagle" is a great story that follows the life and times of a fighter pilot through twenty years and three wars. Carl "Bing" Morro, the story's protagonist, is a charasmatic and likable hero who has the potential to become as an enduring a character as James Bond or Jack Ryan. Yet the author is careful to keep Morro grounded in humanity. We watch him grow from a cocky young kid to a battle-scarred combat officer, all the while retaining his same likeable charm throughout the book.

The supporting characters are as richly drawn as well. They will definitely evoke an emotional reponse. One character irritated me so much, I kept waiting for him to get shot down! This is the level of skill by which the author pulls you in. You actually care about these people, and that keeps the pages turning.

The story is an engaging blend of action and drama set against an amazingly accurate historical backdrop.

Take it for a test flight.

The New Dogsteps: A Better Understanding of Dog Gait Through Cineradiography ("Moving X-Rays")

Average review score:

great
An excellent book for the understanding of gait in dogs. It allows a untrained person to understand and see gait faults that may be potential problems for the dog later. And absolute must for anyone planning to show or breed dogs and also useful for the any potential owner in picking out a new pet.

New England White Water River Guide
Published in Paperback by Appalachian Mountain Club Books (March, 1981)
Author: Ray Gabler
Average review score:

It's a shame this book is out of publication
This book is an excellent tour of over 100 rivers of all difficulties throughout New England and New York. With detailed descriptions of each run, a table listing relevant information (length of shuttle and run, difficulty, water levels, etc), and a simple but helpful map for each river, this is the book that I and my friends go to first when deciding where to paddle.

The only problem with this book is its age; published in 1981, it doesn't reflect changes in river condition, quality, and access. If someone updated this book, I'd buy three copies in an instant -- one for home, one for work, and one for the shuttle vehicle!

The New Irish Americans
Published in Paperback by National Book Network (June, 1998)
Authors: Ray O`Hanlon, Ray O'Hanlon, and Pete Hamill
Average review score:

A "must have" for anyone with Irish-American connections.
This book shows incredible insight into the new era of Irish emigrants. It is very well written by the author who obviously has first hand experience of this exciting new generation of Irish in America. These people are there under such different circumstances to some of our ancestors. A great book and I love the cover.

The New! Improved! Bob & Ray Book
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill (November, 1986)
Authors: Bob Elliott and Ray Goulding
Average review score:

Bob and Ray in print - almost as funny as hearing them.
Approach this small book as a collection of comedy routines written for a Bob and Ray broadcast; while reading it, longtime fans will probably hear in their minds the duo's voices and inflections. And this book is even more fun when reading along with the recording of Bob and Ray themselves reading the routines. But whatever the circumstances, this is a good, and funny, introduction to Bob and Ray's work. And knowing that this was one of their last works together makes one realize how remarkable their comedy was.

If you like old Fords...
If you are a fan of 1950's Fords, you NEED this book. I really enjoyed seeing the up grades that were included with each new model year and the latest and greatest options. I liked the way that the author used unrestored autos to show the different models. Good addition to any automobile enthusiest's library.

Night at the Opera
Published in Paperback by The Porcupine's Quill (December, 1992)
Author: Ray Smith
Average review score:

Darned peculiar but hilarious
A peculiar tale of a fictional European town and its celebrated, bizarre, yet completely ungifted composer. It is howl-out-loud funny. Why doesn't anybody know who this writer is? (It's Ray Smith, incidently, not just Smith)

One of my all-time favorite books. Okay, I'm weird. But if you like PDQ Bach you should LOVE this book.
